Celebrating Bat Appreciation Month

October is Bat Appreciation Month!

Seems like the appropriate month considering bats are so connected to the spookiness of Halloween, but they also

-eat their body weight in insects every night.

-are the only flying mammal.

-can reach speeds of over 100 mph

-are not blind, but studying how bats use echolocation has helped scientists develop navigational aids for the blind.

-help spread seeds for nuts, figs and cacao — the main ingredient in chocolate. Without bats, we also wouldn’t have plants like agave, bananas, avocados and mangos.

They really are an important species that impact our daily lives in ways we might not even realize. In order to celebrate these amazing creatures and all that they do for us, I made a bat of my own out of black paper (scroll for the template and a picture of the back of the bat) hot glue and a clothespin. You can spray the clothespin black if you’d like, but that isn’t necessary.

Make a few of your own! Spooky or not, bats are the perfect addition for your home right now! ❤️🦇
